General generator FAQ.s
This will supply sanswers to some of the more fequently asked questions
What is an automatic standby generator?
An automatic standby generator is a back-up electrical system that operates whether you are home or away. Within seconds of an outage, it automatically supplies power directly to your home’s electrical circuit breaker box. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and waits for the next outage. It operates on natural gas, diesel, or liquid propane gas and sits outside just like a central air conditioning unit.
Why should I buy a home standby generator instead of a portable generator?
While portable generators are effective in terms of backup power, a home standby generator produces more power, offers hassle-free, automatic operation even when you aren't at home and exercises weekly to ensure extended life. With a home standby generator, there is no need to run extension cords, the unit will operate rain or shine, and it will automatically turn on even when you are not home.
What is the difference between an automatic air-cooled generator and an automatic liquid-cooled generator?
The engines! Air-cooled generators come with engines that use fans to force air across the engine for cooling, while liquid cooled generators use enclosed radiator systems for cooling, similar to an automobile. Generally, liquid cooled engines are used on larger wattage generators due to the larger engines required for the higher power output.
Can an automatic standby generator replace utility service?
No. The generator fuel costs would be much more expensive than buying power from the utility company since their cost to produce electricity is divided among thousands of customers.
How do I correctly size a generator for my home?
The most logical way to determine your needs is to envision your home without power! Some outages may be short in duration, while others could last for days or weeks. What would you like your living conditions to be? In a typical installation with an 8 kW, eight circuit generator, you could connect (1) lights and TV in the family room, (2) microwave and lights in the kitchen, (3) refrigerator, (4) power to the bathroom, (5) computer and home office, (6) garage door opener, (7) air conditioner, and (8) furnace.
Can I install the standby generator myself?
You could perform the simpler site preparation steps and have a professional make the electrical panel and fuel connections, or you could complete the entire installation yourself. However, for safety reasons and to ensure adherence to all local, state and national electrical codes, particularly for non pre-wired or larger systems, we recommend you use a licensed contractor.
Do they have to be maintained?
Yes, simple maintenance is required. All generators require periodic oil and filter changes to ensure maximum performance for years of reliable service. Preventative maintenance kits are available Refer to the owner’s manual for routine maintenance procedures and schedules.
What type of oil should I use?
An SAE rated high detergent oil that meets API Service Class SF requirements for gasoline engines, similar to your car. A 10w30 oil is recommended as the standard generator motor oil to use in our home standby generator engines. Regularly check the oil level in your standby generator. Refer to your owner’s manual for details.
What happens if the generator gets over loaded?
In the rare event of an overload, the generator’s circuit breaker will trip, disconnecting the unit from the load. Simply correct the overload and reset the breaker in the generator.
What is the difference between rated watts and maximum (surge) watts?
Rated watts describe the amount of power the portable generator can produce continuously. Maximum wattage is the power that the generator can produce for short periods of time. Motor starting is a good example of maximum wattage requirements.
What type of oil is recommended? How often should it be changed?
Above 40°F, use SAE 30. Below 40°F and down to 10°F, use 10W-30. Below 10°F, use synthetic 5W-30. Oil should be changed after the first 8 hours of operation and every 200 hours of run time thereafter.
When should I add engine oil through the spark plug hole in my generator?
Adding a little bit of oil through the spark plug hole in your generator so that it will directly enter the cylinder will prevent it from rusting. This should be done if you don't plan to use your generator for a long time.
What type of gasoline is recommended?
Use clean, fresh unleaded gasoline with a minimum 85 octane rating. Turn off the generator engine and allow it to cool about 2 minutes before refueling. Never put gas into your generator while the engine is running.
Why should I use a gas stabilizer or additive for my generator?
The use of a gas stabilizer or additive will minimize the formation of fuel gum deposits during storage. Additives and stabilizers may be added to the gasoline in the fuel tank of the engine, or to the gasoline in a storage container. Make sure your fuel supply is reliable over time with the appropriate additives or stabilizers.
Does a portable generator require installation?
No. A portable can power individual appliances using extension cords. Using a manual transfer switch is even a safer way to power items in the house because it will block any power from back feeding in the power lines. It will also avoid a bunch of extension cords and allow you to power items hardwired into your house like a furnace fan.
Should the fuel be drained when storing the portable generator?
Yes. It is highly recommended that you drain the fuel from the tank and run the carburetor dry. You should never store combustible materials in your home or vehicle. Remember: You should never operate a generator in a confined space, particularly inside your home or garage. Carbon monoxide is deadly and can kill.
Can I vent the exhaust out of an enclosed area?
No. Never run the generator in the home or an enclosed area. Portable generators are designed to run outside where there is plenty of ventilation.
Can the generator be used during inclement weather?
Generators can be used during a wide variety of weather temperatures, but should be protected from the elements when not in use to prevent shorting and rusting. NEVER run a generator indoors.
Things to know before investing in a generator
Buying a generator can be a scary process. However if you take control by being informed and getting organized its not that complicated. This checklist will help in choosing the correct generator to protect your home and family.
• Determine wattage needs. Determine how much power you need. This will depend if you are catering for frequent power outages, emergencies or if you are dependant on a generator 24/7. Refer to the post on “What size generator do you need? “ for a power selection worksheet.
Remember if you are using a “portable” generator as emergency back up you will also need a transfer switch to safely power the circuits in your home.
• Decide: Standby or portable? Considering your budget, convenience, and power needs, choose which type of generator you want.
• Take care of home power issues. Locate your existing electrical service panel and gas line to target any potential problems before buying a generator.
Determine how the generator is going to be powered - Electricity is not an option.
• Perform product comparisons. Compare power outputs, run times, and prices, as well as what’s included in those prices, such as accessories, warranties, support and installation. Determine hourly running costs for various fuels.
• Determine financing options. Some retail stores offer financing options for generator purchases. Is there free shipping? Where will the generator be delivered to the road side or where it will be used?
• Consider items needed to make it work. Does the generator come with warranty or maintenance package? What about a power cord, oil, wheels, and funnel?
• Consider additional costs. How much more will it cost for installation by a qualified professional? Will you need an accessories like a cover for protection from the elements or a transfer switch? What are the annual maintenance requirements? Will it need a base or addition protection to be built?
• Establish your budget. Generator prices fall across a wide range, so determining how much you’d like to spend is important.
• Understand electrical terms. You’ll see a lot about watts, volts, amps and more, make sure you have a working knowledge of these terms.
What size generator do you need?
Getting a generator that can handle all your power generation needs is one of the most critical aspects of the purchasing decision Whether you are interested in prime or standby power, if your new generator can't meet your specific requirements then it simply won't be doing anyone any good because it can put undue stress on the unit and even damage some of the devices connected to it.
Dont fall into the trap of believing smaller generators can be used for standby electric power because they are not running all the time. This is not only a myth but can actually be very detrimental. Generator under sizing is one of the most common mistakes committed by buyers Not only does it involve the risks of damaging your new asset (the generator), but it can also damage other assets connected to it, create hazardous situations, and even limit overall productivity of the unit and/or the business relying on it If nothing else, the key thing to remember here is that more is always better than less, or put another way buy the biggest you can afford.
When calculating the “size/capacity” or wattage of the generator you need, there are two main considerations:
• Continuous Power (or running watts) is the wattage required for operation of your appliances under normal load. This may be some or all of the appliances depending on circumstances.
• Extra Peak Power (or startup watts) is the extra wattage required for appliances at startup or when they are running at their highest levels of power consumption.
Generally an average size home requires from 5000 to 7000 watts to power essential items.
Step 1: Review the chart below and identify the number of tools/ appliances that will be running at peak time. To determine your needs, total the watts for the items you would like to run at the same time . This provides you with the number of continuous or running watts your generator must supply.
Step 2: Now select the largest number of starting watts assigned to the items you wish to use.
Step 3: Total these two numbers and this will indicate the size generator required to meet your need.
To be on the safe side you may wish to add an extra 10%

If you have items that are not on the list, check the appliance, the product manual, or the manufacturer’s Web site for the device’s continuous and surge wattage. If amps are noted on the device, you can calculate watts by multiplying amps times the voltage. For example, a 7 amp device on 120v AC current would equal 840 watts (7 x 120 = 840).

History of Winco Power Systems
In Cherokee, Iowa, two brothers, John and Gerhard Albers, developed a wind generator to recharge a six-volt storage battery. They called their invention "The Wincharger." It worked so well that friends and neighbors were soon asking the Albers brothers to build Winchargers for them. Their business grew and in 1935, Wincharger was incorporated as a business and manufacturing was moved to Sioux City, Iowa.
During World War II, the Dynamotor was developed and used in military aircraft and ships. After the war, the Dynamotor became the basis for the two bearing generator know today as the 2FS which is still sold in large quantities for pressure washers and man lift applications. Wincharger continued to expand its product line by initiating new designs of Dynamotors, inverters, alternators, Winchargers, engine-driven generators, transistorized converters, ground electrical support equipment and radio receiving sets.
In 1950, the Winco line of Power Take Off (PTO) generators was born. This line of generators was designed to run off of the power takeoff drive of a tractor. A complete line of portable engine-driven generators was introduced for commercial and industrial applications in 1952. Research and development continued to produce important innovations. In 1955, their company introduced the first automatic idle control (conserver) for portable generators. Extended engine life, fuel conservation and reduced noise were all-important benefits to be derived from their invention which has set an industry standard for portable generators.
The Maxi-Watt and Full-Power generator designs were introduced in 1964. These designs vastly improved performance in heavy-duty motor starting applications and provided usable full capacity output at 120 volts, 240 volts, or both simultaneously. In 1970, their company introduced the Winco Automatic Power Systems - a complete line of packaged standby generators. Key to their success of the packaged standby generator was the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The ATS made it possible to automatically start their standby generator when normal electrical power was interrupted.
By the mid seventies, Winco had become a major supplier of generators to the rental and construction markets. In 1978, Winco began producing water-cooled generators. In the same year, Winco developed the first switchable voltage Mobile Power System to supply temporary and emergency power needs in the construction, industrial and government markets.
In 2000, a number of new Packaged Standby Systems were developed as well as some redesigns of existing models. In this new decade, Winco is looking forward to a number of new products and innovations.
Today, Winco customers continue to benefit from their 75 years of generator experience. Recent additions to their line-up include their new 10 & 12 KW Honda powered Home Standby systems, a rugged and powerful 12 KW portable model for the Construction and Roofing Market and a new 6KW Tri-Fuel portable for Home Standby that runs on gasoline, LP or natural gas. Across the board they are incorporating new technology to provide the cleanest and most reliable power in the industry. Winco generators are built
